Romney: My Sons Serve America by Getting Me Elected

August 8, 2007

Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney reached new heights - or lows - of banality in Iowa on Wednesday. Romney defended his five sons' choices not to enlist in the military, claiming instead they serve their nation by "helping me get elected."
Mitt Romney, as you'll recall, avoided combat duty in the rice fields of Vietnam by getting multiple deferments to perform his Mormon mission in the vineyards of France. And while candidate Romney has called for a war against virtually all Muslim groups worldwide and pledged to "double Guantanamo," he has deployed his sons to the cornfields of Iowa to aid his campaign. The perfect hair and gleaming teeth of the Romney clan are found on the Five Brothers blog, not with a band of brothers outside of Baquba.
So on Wednesday, Rachel Griffiths of Milan, Illinois asked Romney about the non-service of his privileged sons, one of whom is completing a 99 county tour of Iowa in a campaign RV. Romney's answer was, well, Romneyesque;

"My sons are all adults and they've made decisions about their careers and they've chosen not to serve in the military and active duty and I respect their decision in that regard. One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I'd be a great president. I respect that and respect all those and the way they serve this great country."

In typical fashion, Romney conflated selfishness with selflessness. But if the response of Ms. Griffiths was any indication, American voters are waking up to the Great Pretender. Asked if she was satisfied with Mitt's glib answer, Griffiths said:

"Of course not. He told me the way his son shows support for our military and our nation is to buy a Winnebago and ride across Iowa and help him get elected."

Luckily for Romney, no one asked him about his predilection for rooftop canine waterboarding.
UPDATE: Rachel Griffiths herself apparently has more over at DailyKos.

  1. Rachel Griffiths' question about the decision Romney's five sons' made to not serve in the military is a fair one. And Hillary Clinton needs to answer the same question about the decision made by her 27 year old daughter Chelsea to not volunteer to serve in the United States Military. In fact, for comparison purposes, this question should be asked of all candidates with children who have been or are eligible to serve in the US Military. What is good for Mother Goose (Clinton's daughter) should be good for Father Gander (Romney's sons) as well as for any of the other candidates.

  2. I do have to say I'm not too impressed with Chelsea's public service at the Hedge Fund.

  3. Does no one grasp the concept that it is hypocritical for a vocal supporter of the "existential war" to find any means to avoid service, whereas the failure of one who opposes the war to volunteer is consistent with their beliefs?

  4. OMG - go to the mormonpolitics.org website and read the Moronic comments they make about Harry Reid (an enemy - because he is a Dem, doesn't support the surge in Iraq)
The Morms are very influential in politics, go to famousmormons.org and choose your candidate.
Google "Kolob" and "What Mitt Romney believes" and then wonder why they call those who want the war over "tin foil hat wearing liberals", including the Dems and Repub Ron Paul supporters - who they wish would just go away.
Blackwater is under investigation for unconstitutional mercenary work in Bush's war. But they are all over the Mitt Campaign. Google "mitt romneys inner circle" and you will see a who's who of Bushies.
The Mormons donate cash to Islamic Relief Worldwide, which is supporting Hamas according to Israel, and is under investigation. The Mormon members murmur also about the wisdom of the elders in donating cash to North Korea.
The priesthood of the Mormon church is just a bunch of rich white guys. They don't like the interracial mixing that has become America, and hope Mitt will be able to send those mongrels away. Mitt has decided that 100,000 more troops need to go to fight in Iraq and defend our nation against Islam Jihadists. Do you think if that requires a draft that any one of his sons will be drafted? NO WAY
Ron Paul for getting US back on the road to a freer country again, with economic backbone and strong defense here, peace for generations.

  5. do you feel any shame in making the statement "Mormons donate cash to Islamic Relief which is supporting Hamas according to Israel, and is under investigation" ? i mean, how low you can go? looking from israel's perspective, any help to palestinians is terrorism. Islamic Relief is a 4 star charity, the distincition given to a selected few relief organization in USA due to their exemplary work. USA has shut down anyone on which israel has pointed finger at, without any proof. Holy land foundation was shut down 5 years ago and only now trial has started, only after government came up with new "thought crimes" on which they decided to charge them on since they could not find any facts.
